We note with sorrow the death of Vic Wilkie, 11 Inch Garvie.
Flowers in the sanctuary today are provided by Lesley Gauld.
Our organist this morning is Christine Knox.
Thanks to all those who contributed to last week’s offerings:
Freewill Offering £339.00
Open Plate £201.30
If you know of anyone who is in or just out of hospital or who needs an elder or staff member to call, please leave the information at the Welcome Desk. We would also appreciate suggested names to receive flowers after today’s or a forthcoming service – call at the Welcome Desk.
The monthly Prayer Diary:
For 2018 we have decided not to give the Focus Groups a month but to ask that each Group contribute ONE item (at least) per month. If you have a specific date please hand it in as early as possible. These can be given as a bullet point and we will expand. All requests can be given to Myra, Christine or Hannah or left in the Prayer Diary Pigeonhole in the Elders Room. Thank you.
Christian Aid Week – 13th to 19th May:
Door to Door Collection Packs:
Thank you to everyone who has offered to help with this year’s door to door collection for Christian Aid. Collectors’ packs are ready for collection on the table at the back of the sanctuary. Please ensure that you take your Christian Aid ID with you when you go to collect the envelopes. Can you return your bags to Joan Thomson either on Sunday 21st May or bring them along to the Church on Monday the 22nd May at 7pm when we will be counting the monies received. Thank you all for your help.
Christian Aid Envelopes:
As it is impossible to cover the whole of the parish by door to door collections for Christian Aid, we’ve included donation envelopes inside this week’s update. If you wish to give a donation, please return your envelope to the church on Sunday 20th May. A Christian Aid bag will be available to receive your donations, on the table with the collection plates as you enter the church. I have left a supply of envelopes on the table at the back of the Sanctuary should you wish to take extra envelopes for friends and family. Or see me after church and I will be delighted to provide any extra envelopes you may require. The provision of the envelopes in the church update has proved very successful in past years and I hope that you will once again support this worthwhile Charity. Please keep all our collectors in your prayers during the week ahead.
Christian Aid Count:
There will be a meeting to count the donations received during Christian Aid Week on Monday 21st May at the Church at 7pm. If you could spare some time to help with this then it would be gratefully received. The count should only take about an hour or so but the more volunteers we have the quicker it will be done. Please consider helping in this way. If you would like more information on any of these items please do not hesitate to contact Joan Thomson (01355 238100 or email firstname.lastname@example.org)
Anniversary edition of the magazine is now available.
A new series has just begun, and the booklets with themes and studies are available. Our small groups meet during the week – some morning, some afternoon, some evening, on various days of the week. There is a group at a time that will suit you. Why not come along if you have not been before? In this series we are looking at some classic objections that people make to Christianity – suffering, only one way to God, intolerance and so on. A great opportunity to tease out what and why we believe and to help one another respond to folk who might have questions about following Jesus. For more information or to find out where and when a group meets that you could join, contact Martin Russell (email@example.com) or Ali Scott (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Display is on Thursday 24th May at 7.15 pm in the Sanctuary.
The club is going to Dobbie’s Garden Centre and Livingston Outlet on Wednesday 6 June. The bus leaves church car park at 10 am, home for 5-5.30 pm. Two seats are available – cost £10 each. Anyone interested please contact Jean Anderson (241966).
As well as being Claremont’s 50th Anniversary, this year also marks the 50th Anniversary of Tearfund. As a result, there are a number of celebration concerts taking place all around Scotland and we have the privilege of hosting one of these concerts on Friday 8th June. Tickets can be purchased from the church office, or from Ali Scott or Helen Cuthbertson. Alternatively the tickets can be purchased online: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tearfund-scotland-jubilee-concerts-2018-tickets-43709780129?aff=es2
Beatson Cancer Charity:
Stuart Russell is attempting a number of cycle challenges in aid of the Beatson Cancer Charity again this year. He completed the Evans Cycles Callander Road Sportive at the beginning of April (87 miles) and next is the Drumlanrig Sportive (86 miles) at the beginning of May. If you would like to sponsor him Martin will have sponsor forms on Sunday. Last year Stuart and his friends in Whitelee Warriors raised £1,540.
Position of Church Secretary:
As many of you will probably know our wonderful Church Secretary, Margaret Jenkins, is retiring in June. This means that we will require a replacement for her.
